2025 Desbarats Christmas Bird Count Results

Written by Jazmin Gall, Field Technician

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 10th annual Desbarats Christmas Bird Count, which took place on December 27, 2025!

This year, 34 volunteers took part in the count. Of those, 18 were out in the field while 15 monitored their feeders throughout the day.

Between count day and count week, we recorded a total of 35 species and an impressive 3,486 individual birds. We came just a few birds short of matching our all-time high of 3,493 birds set in 2020, but there’s always next year!

Several species reached new record highs this year;

  • Sharp-tailed Grouse - 57 (previously 29)

  • Downy Woodpecker - 31 (previously 25)

  • Black-capped Chickadee - 573 (previously 543)

  • Horned Lark - 48 (previously 16)

The five most abundant species recorded this year were;

  • Redpoll - 655

  • Black-capped Chickadee - 573

  • American Goldfinch - 288

  • American Crow - 271

  • Snow Bunting - 260

Notable highlights included a Sharp-shinned Hawk, the unusually high number of Horned Larks compared to previous years, and a count week sighting of a Barred Owl (the only owl species recorded this year).

All of this data will be submitted to the National Audubon Society, who will make it available to scientists, researchers, and conservationists.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all participants and supporters of the Central Algoma Land Trust. This event, and many others, would not be possible without your dedication and support.
