Fishing Line Recycling Station Program

Fishing line recycling stations offer anglers a responsible avenue for disposing of used fishing lines, instead of discarding or accidentally losing them in water bodies where they pose a significant threat to aquatic life such as ducks, otters, and fish. Once collected, the lines will undergo a recycling process where they are cleaned, melted down, and repurposed into new products, reducing the impact of discarded fishing gear on aquatic ecosystems.

About the Program

Discarded fishing line poses a significant threat to people, property, and wildlife. Lost or improperly disposed fishing line can remain in the environment for up to 600 years, creating ongoing hazards for aquatic and terrestrial species. Because fishing line is not accepted by most municipal recycling programs, disposal options are limited. Even when placed in household garbage, fishing line can escape into the environment through wind, landfill operations, or wildlife activity, where it may become entangled with or ingested by animals.

To help address this issue, the Fishing Line Recycling Station Program was launched in 2025 in partnership with Lake Huron North. Funding provided by Lake Huron North enabled the construction and installation of ten fishing line recycling stations throughout the Central Algoma region. Located at boat launches and marinas, these stations offer anglers a convenient and environmentally responsible way to dispose of used fishing line.

Collected fishing line is regularly emptied, sorted, and shipped to the Berkley Conservation Institute, where it is recycled into products such as artificial fish habitat structures, tackle boxes, and fishing line spools. By diverting fishing line from landfills and waterways, the program helps protect local ecosystems while supporting innovative recycling solutions.

Station Locations

This project would not have been possible without the support of local municipalities, townships, and business owners who welcomed these stations into their communities. We extend our sincere thanks to the Township of St. Joseph, Village of Hilton Beach, Township of Johnson, Town of Thessalon, Municipality of Huron Shores, and Kensington Point Marina for their partnership and commitment to protecting our waterways and wildlife.

How to Get Involved

The Fishing Line Recycling Station Program has received an overwhelmingly positive response from municipalities, businesses, and community members across the region. As interest in the program continues to grow, we are seeking funding opportunities and partnerships that will allow us to expand our network of recycling stations and reach more communities.

If you know of a potential funding source, grant opportunity, sponsorship, or partnership that could support the expansion of this program, we would love to hear from you. To learn more or discuss opportunities to get involved, please contact Jazmin at  jazmin@calt.ca or 705-782-2200
