Field Technician

The Central Algoma Land Trust is a charitable organization that protects nearly 500 hectares of ecologically sensitive land in the Central Algoma region. We are looking to hire one employee to conduct property monitoring, ecological surveys, trail maintenance, community outreach, volunteer engagement, and other associated tasks.

Location: Desbarats, Ontario
Anticipated Start Date: Mid-to-late September 2025
Contract Length: 52 weeks with the possibility of renewal

Compensation: $20.00/hour (35 hours/week)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • conduct environmental monitoring of nature preserves for ecological health

  • collect data on the presence of native and invasive flora and fauna species

  • conduct species inventories and implement wildlife monitoring programs

  • lead guided tours of nature preserves and assist with delivery of educational programing to community members and youth groups

  • conduct trail maintenance and investigate disturbances to nature preserve sites

  • assist with community outreach, organizing funding events, and volunteer engagement

 
Qualifications and Skills Required

  • post-secondary diploma or degree in a field related to natural resources

  • identification of local flora and fauna species, including invasive species

  • knowledge of local ecosystems and how they function

  • experience working outdoors in all weather conditions and exceptional outdoor navigation skills

  • experience using Microsoft Office, Google, mapping and other related software

  • the ability to work both independently and as a team

  • valid drivers license

  • valid pleasure craft operators card


Candidate Eligibility

  • new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field

  • must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship

  • 18 years of age or older

  • legally eligible to work in Canada

  • once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed

  • available for some evening and weekend work

  • willing to complete a vulnerable sector check
